If you have a lb Honda Goldwing with a complex dedicated heat treated casting OEM swingarm that's fine Late model Touring Harley swingarms are heavy but they are never going to bend or break. We got an education in that in the early s from someone who used molten salt heat treating of aluminum motorcycle swingarms.
Normalization and post weld heat treating back to a T6 condition. A 24 tooth sprocket replaces the OEM belt drive pulley on the models. A 26 tooth sprocket replaces the OEM belt drive pulley on and later models. We've been involved in racing for well over 35 years and there simply are not any final drive belts on race bikes. If you leave your bike stock, or lightly modify it, keep your final belt drive. If you are a horsepower freak or you want flexibility in your final drive ratio then go chain drive.

With that being said, I started looking for a way to fix this problem and found the cure.
Custom Cycle Engineering solved the issue with their swingarm conversion kit. I can tell you that if I ever buy another bike after this one, I will be purchasing this kit first thing. The kit comes with all the supplies you need including a tool to press in the bearings to the right depth.
When this swingarm kit was delivered, my dogs got to it before I did. So the first thing I had to do was look for all the parts in the shop yard. I located everything and then went to work. The kit also includes Loctite and antiseize; everything but the tools. The first thing you need to do is take off the bags and anything that will get in the way of removing the back wheel. Once I had the exhaust and other crap out of the way, I raised the bike and started the wheel removal. This will prevent damage to the brake system. After the wheel is removed and the caliper is tied up, you can start the swingarm removal. Locate the swingarm pivot bolt behind the rear foot peg mount and remove the foot rest and mounts. With those off, you can remove the swingarm pivot bolt. Sometimes these things can be a pain so be careful not to damage your bike.
Swing Arm Bags
The problem is with the tranny case being aluminum and the pivot bolt on older models being steel can corrode and gald solid. So I take a long punch and drive it out. With the bolt out, you can remove the rubber bushing on the outside of the swingarm and then pull out the swingarm.
With the swingarm out, you have to remove the bushings that are in the swingarm. This can be a little tricky. The bushings have to be pressed from the inside out! I learned this the hard way: inside out. To use these presses, you have to be able to stabilize the swingarm in the press.
I found this to be very cumbersome and extremely hard to do. So I grabbed a BFH, the old pivot arm and a 1. In three minutes, both bushings were on the floor. The two hours I wasted on the press was useless. Now clean the swingarm really well so the bearings can go in cleanly. Now you can install the bearings; they already have been pressed on the race.
Apply a coating of Loctite to the outside of the bearing. Installing this bearing is pretty easy. Install it with the big shoulder going against the transmission. I used the tool supplied in the kit and just lightly tapped the bearing into place in the swingarm.After a period of time some of the motorcycles developed handling problems.
These problems were related to the Cleveblock style bushings in the swing arm. As the engine moved on the rubber mounts, it allowed the rear wheel to sway from side to side, similar to a cornering position.
First the wheel had to go. Upgraded rubbermount. There have been numerous aftermarket products addressing this problem with varying degrees of success But in Harley changed the Clevebloc bushing to a spherical bearing in their FLT models. The spherical bearing allows the swing arm to react quicker to road conditions keeping the wheel in contact with the road. They also diminished lateral and torsional movement of the swingarm by their design.
I have a and know they work. Rogue removing the Swingarm. Swingarm out of the bike. New bearing. Pressing stock bearing out. I have a pro-street custom FXR. I experienced uncomfortable handling between and mph. I decide to upgrade it with the CCE kit and see if that would solve the problem. The kit comes with all the parts necessary to install the new Spherical Bushings in the swingarm, including a tool to press them in.
The swingarm pivot shaft is optional but I highly recommend replacing it during this operation. The kit comes with very complete instructions, but I still recommend having a service manual available for procedure and torque specs. Rogue working his magic with the shop press. Remove the rear wheel, swingarm end-caps and pivot shaft.
Once the swingarm is removed use a hydraulic press to remove the old Clevebloc assemblies, clean all parts. The kit comes with Red Locktite and Antisieze. Apply a coating of the Loctite to the swing arm housing and the race of one of the bearings, install with the 45 degree chamfered bearing carrier-end going in first and using the press-plug to install it in the swing arm.
Bottoming the press-plug against the face of the swing arm shoves it into the proper position. Let the Loctite to set up for two hours. Torquing the swingarm to specs.
