Steinhauer, Dietmar.Autumn Leaves is a great song to get starting playing easy chord melody arrangements on guitar. This famous jazz standard is both a great melody and a fairly easy option to play an easy chord melody. In this lesson I will go over a chord melody arrangement of Autumn Leaves that I made.
The chords I am using are for the biggest part simple 3-note voicings called shell-voicings and I have also included some exercises to check those out. You can scroll down and download the PDF of the Arrangement at the end of the page. The key that I am using for Autumn Leaves in this arrangement is G minor.
This is not the key from the real book, but it is the most common key for performing the song. The arrangement is using call-response to also allow the chords to add some groove to. This also allows for using the melody in the lower octave that often sounds a little fuller. To learn the chord melody we need some chords to play with the melody. The melody of Autumn Leaves is mostly a pick-up with followed by a single long note on the heavy bar.
You can think of the first phrase as an example. This makes it easy to add chords while the long note is sounding. Most of the chords that I use here are shell voicings, so it is a good idea to check those out in G minor. For each exercise I start with the lowest possible chord and then move up one octave. The first place to start with chord melody is learning the melody! In fact, it would be a more appropriate name if we turned it around: Melody Chord.
This is because we are playing the melody and adding the chords, not the other way around hopefully. In example 3, here below. I have written out the melody for the first 8 bars of the song.
It is written out in the places where I want to play the melody so that I can easily fit chords under it. Really knowing the melody well and being comfortable moving it around the neck is essential when you start making your own chord melody arrangements which should be 20 minutes after checking out this lesson….
The A part of this song has the same structure for all phrases: a pickup and a long note. This means that the chords can be paired together and played in between the phrases. When I am playing the melody I end on a note that is included in the chord and I make sure to use a fingering where I can add the chord while sustaining that note.
In this case that is as much a technical as it is a musical consideration. The second half of the song is a bit more complicated. Of course, the melody has to change a bit not to become boring so in the B part, there are other melodic patterns. In the first bar of there is no room to add a chord until the 4th beat which forces a change in the pattern and the rhythm of the chords.
How to Navigate Autumn Leaves
The next 6 bars again allows for adding the chords between phrases. On the 9th bar of the B part the melody takes up the entire bar and I add the shell voicing under it.
The faster moving progression that follows: Gm7 C7 Fm7 Bb7 is harmonized first with a drop3 Gm7 voicing and for the rest shell voicings. This makes it impossible to sustain the melody, but it still works.
The last cadence has an Eb6 with the 6th in the melody and on the last D7 the melody is so low that I chose not to have any chords at all. I hope this helps! Some instruments transpose to another key, and so they are playing different notes than a piano. Anyway, all that to say that a trombone IS a Bb instrument because the first position overtone series starts on Bb, but they are also a C instrument as far as the written notes go, as the trombone is non-transposing concert pitch.

The chord progression and melody of the C section are both different from the first A!
The easiest way to improvise over this progression is to use a Bb Major scale since all of the chords are in the key of Bb Major! Of course, you must give emphasis to the chord tones to identify each chord but you can more or less just move around in the key and you will be getting the general sound. Even better, try to use some digital patterns to get good melodic motion over the progression! You can find some ideas about digital patterns in my blog about the II - V - I progression.
Similar to the first four measures, the easiest way to improvise over this progression is to use a G Harmonic Minor scale. It includes all of the chord tones of the three chords with one exception: The Gmi7 has an F natural in it and the G Harmonic Minor scale has an F in it. So the F in the scale should not be emphasized but can still be used as a melodic approach tone to the note G root of the Gmi7 chord. Again, emphasize chord tones and try to use digital patterns moving through the G Harmonic Minor scale.
Most melodic patterns will sound equally good over either a II - V - I in major or minor. The chord progression of the bridge B section is just the opposite of the A sections as follows:. So the same approach as was used in the A sections applies here but is reversed.
The first two and a half measures constitute a II - V - I in G Minor so the same approach used in the first 24 bars of the tune applies here. But the 3rd and 4th bars change keys quickly! However, the Eb7 requires a dominant 7th scale Mixolydian that includes a Db. The last three measures may again use the G Harmonic Minor Scale. But, as you become confident improvising on the tune, you will probably want more variety in the sound!
So then you may want to change the scale choice with each chord.

Many of these choices are already made for you by the function of the chord, the key, and the context preceding and following chords.
Some of these choices are a matter of fact as is indicated below:. The quick key changes provide enough harmonic interest!
So use the major scales of the keys, F Major and Eb Major. These two measures also present an opportunity for melodic sequences so try to play the same identical melodic idea in both keys! When embarking on this more complex treatment, be sure to start at a slower tempo and try to emphasize the 3rds and 7ths of chords. These are the most important chord tones in any chord and bring out the quality of the chords ma7, mi7, dom7,half-diminished, etc. Listen to recordings by great artists, copy ideas that you like and incorporate them into your solo!Autumn Leaves is an excellent jazz standard to start with because it covers some basic chord progressions and harmonic concepts found in jazz.

When learning or working on a song, the most important thing you can do is listen. Listen to as many versions of Autumn Leaves as you can. Note: on the Boss Tenors recording there is some added harmonic movement outside of the original chord changes.
However, I always suggest learning the melody by ear. If you read the melody from a piece of sheet music you may get the boiled down, basic idea of the melody, but you miss many of the nuances. But for a quick summary of both, they result in these two charts which essentially show you how chords work to create chord progressions. The Minor Diatonic Series of 7th Chords is based off of the natural minor scale, harmonic minor scale and melodic minor scale.
The V chord is borrowed from the harmonic and melodic minor harmonization. Instead of it being a minor 7 like it would be if it were a natural minor scale it is turned into a dominant 7 chord.

The V chord in traditional harmony is almost always a dominant 7 chord. The V often resolves to the I chord and therefore the V in the harmonic and melodic minor is appropriate in this case. In the same way, the vi chord is borrowed from the melodic minor. Autumn Leaves is almost entirely made up of major and minor ii-V-I chord progressions. You need to understand the roman numeral numbering system as it pertains to this chart.
