However, gilding is actually quite easy to master. All you need are an object to gild and some patience. While the adhesive is drying, cut the leaf into smaller pieces to make it easier to work with. Then, remove the leaf from the tissue paper backing, lay it over your object, and place the tissue backing on top of the gold.

Types of Glue to Use for Gold Leafing
If sandblast lettering, try not to blast too shallow as this will make the leaf look flat and will not last very long or too deeply as this can make the leaf look bronzed and will not reflect the light. Once the lettering is all ready it will need an undercoat either in the form of Transparent Sealer or a gloss enamel paint.
This seals the stone prior to gilding so it is no longer porous and will not absorb the gold size. You may need more than one coat of undercoat and this will need to dry hard before applying the Gold Size. Once dry, it is now ready to apply the Gold Size, this will need to be an oil based Gold Size and many Gilders prefer the tinted size which is off a yellow ochre colour, this enables the gilder to see where they have painted the size and also if any small parts have been missed when gilding, this will not show as it will blend in, being close in colour.
This is brushed onto the lettering thinly and once tacky like the dry tack on a post it note it is then ready to apply the Gold Leaf. The drying time for the size and enamel may vary depending on the temperature of where you are working. It will be anything from approximately 30 minutes to 2 hours. Most Monumental Masons use Loose Gold Leaf when gilding on stone and there are several ways to apply the leaf, everybody having their own technique that works for them.
The leaf is usually rolled from the booklet onto the prepared lettering and then brushed over with a Gilders Mop to brush away any excess leaf. If the lettering is not too small and deep Transfer Leaf can be used which when working outside can be easier for you as it eliminates the risk of the leaf blowing away.
The Transfer Leaf is adhered to a piece of acid free tissue paper and this is placed Gold faced down onto the prepared lettering and then with a rubber eraser or a soft cloth, gently rub the back of the tissue paper and this will allow the leaf to be released from the tissue paper. Again, gently brush over the gold leaf with a Gilders Mop to brush away any excess leaf. Wash away all residue with clean water. Real email address is required to social networks.

Also should the lettering last longer than 3. Not sure how long it should last but that does seem a very short length of time. My nanna's has been up for 11 years and still looks brand new. I would be complaining to wherever you got it from personally. Check those to see what it says?
Bufger Forumite 1. We use gold paint on my grandads headstone every few years. We give it a good cleanup every few months but make it look like new when its faded. I wouldnt waste money getting it done professionally. Its outdoors so no matter how much you spend the weather will give the same result. Gigglepig Forumite 1. Perhaps speak to the firm that supplied the original engraving on the stone, and say that you are disappointed?
They may fix it for you or at least provide a good quote. If they don't want to fix it, I guess you can either get a quote to have it done professionally, or do it yourself.
Personally I wouldn't consider marker pen If you get a quote you could also ask how the professionals would fix it. Thanks for replying My dear mum has all the paperwork for the headstone My mum passed away a little under three years ago.
She was buried in the same grave as her mother. The lettering for my nan has been there since she died in the s and still looks OK. We had my mum's name and dates added and that looks fresh as a daisy. When my dad's time comes hopefully, not for a long time we will have the lettering redone when he is added. Treating a project with gold leaf involves gluing it down with a special glue called adhesive sizing, although you can use a standard spray adhesive in some cases. Adhesive size or sizing is a glue designed specifically for working with metal leaf or foil, including gold. Apply the size exactly where you'd like the gold leaf to go, then wait until the size is tacky but not dry. The leafing is set atop the tacky adhesive and burnished or rubbed gently to smooth it down.
Size is available in a quick-dry version, which takes about an hour to become tacky, or a slow-drying version that takes 12 hours or more to cure.
A spray adhesive designed for general use gives you an alternative to sizing and is used while tacky, much like sizing. Spray adhesive is a bit messy and more difficult to control. It works best for general application over a large area, such as a table lamp, rather than for creating fine details on a small project.

Applying the Leaf - Exterior Stone Surfaces It is also OK to use 23 karat leaf, though anything less pure may provide inadequate results, lack of durability and longevity.
Genuine For exterior gilding using Patent Gold leaf is infinitely more efficient, as you can handle and manipulate the leaf with ease due to the gold being attached to the paper surface. Applying the Leaf - Interior Stone Surfaces When applying leafing products to interior stone surfaces any karat of gold may be used and should be determined by the final color, luster and treatment required for your project.

View digital color charts here. Insure that there is full gold coverage on your object before cleaning with your mop brush. Once all the 'holidays' or gaps are filled with gold, use the mop brush to dust off any excess gold.
Be fairly comprehensve but leave a small amount of gold dust. In otherwords, don't give an aggressive 'polish' directly after applying the gold. The adhesive is still soft and your gold may dull if you over work the brush. Allow to set up over night then come back and complete the final 'burnishing' the next day. You can complete this process by using soft cotton, to remove any excess gold pieces and create the finished, burnished gold appearance.
Sealing and Finishing Off Genuine A pack is divided into 20 books with each book containing 25 leaves.Quick-Dry Oil Size will reach tack in approx. In very dry and warm environments, it may reach tack in as little as 1 hour and the open time for gilding may be greatly reduced. It produces excellent results with genuine and metal leaf and is recommended for small projects or when time is limited.

Slow-Set Oil Size is recommended for projects that may require a longer open time for gilding than Quick-Dry will allow. It will reach proper gilding tack in hours and will remain open for gilding with genuine or metal leaf for an equal amount of time.
The open time for gilding with metal leaf is usually less, as it is with other oil sizes. Allow to cure minimum of one week before sealing. Size refers to the adhesive material used to adhere gold, silver, copper or metal leaf to the surface being gilded. There are different forms of size depending on the gilding method; oil based, water based and 'water gilding'. Gilding with water based adhesives should not be confused with traditional water gilding methods or the Kolner Water Gilding System.
Water based adhesives form a tacky surface gluing the leaf to the surface and are not burnishable. Aqua Size and Wunda Size are popular water based sizes and serve as an alternative to oil size for interior projects. Both have an extremely long tack time making it suitable for large scale interior projects or production gilding in manufacturing plants. Aqua Size and Wunda Size are most appropriate when used to gild with metal leaf, but will produce acceptable results with genuine gold.
Porous surfaces should be sealed with A primer prior to sizing. Aqua and Wunda Size are for interior use only. Clean up as soon as possible with water or acetone. Quick Dry oil size gilding.
